END: EMPTY

 Hello there dear gist partner.

HAPPY NEW MONTH! Welcome to the second half of the year 2025, it is my prayer that this half proves a better and more fruitful one than the one before.

Welcome to today’s gist, once again my scheduled gist has been interrupted by something I believe is more urgent, that gist go come no worry.

Recently, I was reading 2 Kings 13 and I saw something really saddening I must say and I thought to share because as sad as it is, it is also motivating.

The prophet Elisha died.

Now, Elisha is arguably one of the most powerful prophets in Jewish and Christian history, a man who could raise a dead child, cause the healing of leprosy and curse an entire genealogy with leprosy, among other mighty deeds. And he died and was buried (2 Kings 13:20). After a while, some people were taking a man to bury and Moabite marauders attacked; scared for their lives, the funeral party throw the man’s corpse and run away. The corpse had the fortune of landing in the tomb of Elisha and on his bones. The Bible records that immediately the corpse touched the bones of Elisha, life was restored to the man and he lived again.

Let’s take a minute to do one small analysis. The Bible records that the man touched the bones of Elisha, not the body, the bones! It was this contact with the bones that brought the man back to life. Now, it takes anything from weeks to years for a corpse to decay away till only the bones are left depending on the condition the body is left in after death. This means that this incident didn’t happen a few days after Elisha died oo, it happened, at the very least, weeks after his death, could possibly be years later. Imagine the kind of power the man had to have had for his bones to still be capable of restoring life to another dead man.

While I was going to stand in awe of Elisha’s anointing and grace, I realized something: the grave isn’t a house for anointing and grace! These are gifts that are given to men to be utilized during their lifetime, there shouldn’t have been a residue to follow Elisha’s corpse to the grave! As I thought on this, I realized that it is possible to go through life thinking you have done what you need to do, not knowing that you have not tapped into certain aspects of the anointing and power of God made available to you; and if that continues to the end of a man’s life, the result is like that of Elisha –untapped potential trapped in the grave.

As I thought on this, a prayer I had seen on someone’s timeline in December 2019 welled up in my heart: Lord, may I die empty. May I not reach Heaven and find that there are assignments left incomplete, territories left unconquered, graces and potential left untapped, missions not attended to, may I reach Heaven and find that Heaven agrees with me that indeed the servant was faithful and finished the work allotted her.

But how do I know what Heaven has assigned for me to do? I go to God, dama na Him send me and na Him hold the blueprint for my life, and I ask Him to show me what it is that He expects of me so that I do that which He expects of me. Unless you go to God, you cannot fully understand what you are meant to do here on Earth and when you don’t understand the scope of the assignment, you definitely cannot carry it out. Let me quickly throw it in here that God may not give you the entire picture at one sitting, He may decide to be showing you small small, work with Him like that, do the one that He has showed you first while you wait on Him to show you the next. Believe me, as you wait on Him, na so Him go continue to show you until you achieve all that He wants you before you leave this earth.

Another thing that I saw in this matter of Elisha’s bones is the fact that it is highly probable that the reason Elisha went to the grave with his heavy anointing was that there was no one for him to pour into. When Elijah was leaving this world(2 Kings 2:1-13), Elisha had been with him, following him from Gilgal to Bethel, to Jericho to the Jordan and even beyond until Elijah was taken up, that was how Elisha became privileged to receive a double portion of Elijah’s anointing. The point being made here is that at the end of Elijah’s time here on Earth, there was Elisha, willing, able and ready to receive the anointing on Elijah’s head, even a double portion of it, but when Elisha reached the end of his life, there was no one like that with him, even Gehazi wey been dey with am since don go let greed make am leprous so he obviously wasn’t available. This made me see again the importance of mentorship. They say success isn’t determined only by the feats a person accomplishes but by the ability to groom others to take over and maintain structures. I believe that if there has been someone to pour on, Elisha would have poured on that person and would not have had to go to the grave with his heavy anointing. This is why mentorship is important, both to the mentor and the mentee: it is an opportunity for the mentee to be taught and groomed, to have essence poured into them, to be guided into becoming who they are meant to be, it is also an opportunity for the mentor to teach, to guide, to pour into a person the virtues that they have been endowed with, to take part in helping another person become all that they should be. God does not intend that you return virtue to Him unused, pour yourself out to people and in His service.

Well, that’s my 2 kobo on this matter, may God help us to die empty.
