YOUR ONIONS
Well hello there!
Today's post is literally going to be a race against time to see me post before 12am😀.
How are you doing? How'd your day go? And how's prep for Christmas going?
Welcome to today's gist.
I 'dashed' one man money on Tuesday. Let me back up and give you the gist properly. So for a while now, the clasp on my wristwatch has been loose; every time I put it on, the clasp would open by itself and the watch would fall to the ground, I've been saying that is is a miracle the glass covering the watch never broke, or even cracked, with the amount of times the watch fell. On Tuesday, I decided to fix it.
There's this Baba outside UNIJOS Main Campus that fixes wristwatches so I went to him on my way home and explained the problem I had with my watch. He asked to see it, looked at it for barely a minute and charged me. After we agreed on the price, I just saw him pick up his presser: I don dey shout for my mind "wait fess, wait ooo! Make e no be wetin I dey think", the Baba simply used his presser to press both ends of the clasp together! I was shocked!! I'm a beader, I have a presser at home but I had no idea that it was all I needed to fix this issue in my watch that had plagued me for weeks!! This was something that would probably have taken me the exact time it took the Baba or maybe even less to fix but there I was, 'dashing' the Baba money to do something that I had the tool for at home.
That experience taught me a couple of things that I want to share with you.
First, having knowledge is extremely important and cannot be overemphasized: you may have everything you need, outside of yourself, to complete a task but I without the requisite knowledge, and skill, on how to combine these things that you have, you'll simply never get the job done. I have a presser at home, I have the strength to have fixed it, but because I didn't know what was to be done to the watch or even how it was to be done, I couldn't fix it. Too many times we are dependent on "everything clicking" to make things work that we forget that we have an active part to play to bring what is needed to fruition. So try your best to gain knowledge even when you don't have the opportunity or tools to utilize it, that's a way better option than having the opportunity, or tools, then finding yourself bereft of the knowledge and skills to use them.
The second thing that experience taught me is the importance of mastery. What had taken me weeks of pondering didn't even take the Baba a minute to figure out what was wrong and how to fix it: in just about three minutes, and I kid you not, I had my wristwatch fixed and was on my way home. Due to practice and honing of his skills, the Baba has become a master at what he does, so he could do that within such a short time and the results were great. Of course I have no knowledge on the repair of wristwatches, except for this new trick I just learned from Baba, so it wasn't possible for me to fix it but Baba, being a pro at what he does could do that speedily. This is why it is important to, in the words of one of my lecturers, "know your onions"; gain mastery at whatever it is that you do, another clueless person like me can come to "dash you money" for something very easy.
Anyway, I dey try to recoup my money, so if your wristwatch clasp is loose, I can now fix such things, talk to me and let me make money 😅😅 (I won't charge you like plenty😉).
I hope you continue to experience God's goodness as we draw the curtains close on 2022.
Till next week.
Love,
Achenyo.
PS. I finished in time!!
Definitely putting it in my syllable memory "...Know your onion" 😂
