THE GOOD 'THESE' DAYS
Hey there!
How have you been? Here's hoping that God continues to be with you and show up for you.
I am really sorry that this week's post is coming so late, please forgive me๐๐พ.
Welcome to today's gist.
A few days ago, my friend Dudu posted on her WhatsApp story her reflections on Christmases past and how she misses the "good old days" of her childhood and I've been sort of ruminating on her words so I decided to share.
I've always been of the opinion that nothing ever prepares you for adulthood. No matter how many times we heard "adulthood na scam", "growing up is overrated" and all the many variations when I was younger, I was continuously looking forward to becoming an adult, a "big person" that would be independent and free to do as they please. I'm just going to stop here to thank my parents for letting me be a child; with the hurry I was in to grow up, I'm grateful in retrospect for all the times I heard "enjoy your childhood", "you are a child, enjoy it" or "no let your body deceive you oh! You still be small pikin" and all the various reminders my parents gave me to force me to enjoy my childhood and slow down my rush into adulthood.
Now I'm an adult and guess what? I want to go back to being that carefree, unbothered and unstressed child: to have my biggest decisions be whether Scooby-Doo was the best pet anyone ever had, to have my area of concentration be learning "Odeshi me ma I no dey shake, the Lord wey dey my side like rock I no fit break..." from Chinwe Ike's 'fire dey', to have my greatest worry be whether I should just continue wearing my old TTS uniforms or apply pressure on my parents to get me the new set of uniforms....
And as I think of the fact that I now miss the childhood that I was in quite a hurry to get over, something really strikes me: we are always so focused on where we want to be that we forget to appreciate the blessing of where we are. We may not be where we would have preferred but we are in a place that's beautiful and has is it's own merits, but how do we ever see what good the place we are in now will be for us if we keep looking at the place we think we should be?
There's a reason we have to go through phases as we live our lives, so I say we stop to enjoy each phase of our lives –we'll never have it back the moment it's gone. After all, 'the good old days' were once 'these days', we shouldn't see their merits only after they've become the 'old days'.
Don't let the vision of where you're going to rob you of the sights where you are has to offer you.
Well I really hope this helps you learn a thing or two, and I'm sorry once again for posting it so late๐๐พ.
Till next week.
Love,
Achenyo.
